Bring the book into your own work and life, one reflection at a time.
These exercises adapt ideas from Janet’s manuscript. Use them alongside your copy, in a notebook, or print the worksheets below. No sign-up is needed.
Explore your purpose
Janet’s three starting points are Personal Meaning, Reason for Being and Legacy. Begin with examples, then look for words and themes that recur.
Personal Meaning
“When have I felt most alive in my work?”
Reason for Being
Complete: “I’m at my best when …”
Legacy
“What difference do I want my life to make beyond my own success?”
Underline a recurring theme. Try expressing your purpose in one memorable sentence. Treat it as a working version you can return to.
Adapted from “How to Define Your Purpose”, Chapter 3.4.
Name the person you want to be
Look beyond your job title and the tasks that fill your day. Use these questions from the book to explore your identity in your own words.
“Who do I see myself as?”
“How could this identity limit me?”
“Who do I want to be?”
Complete the sentence with words that feel true to the person you want to be. Note one way you could express that identity today.
Adapted from “How to Define Your Identity”, Chapter 3.6.
Your three Most Important Priorities
What matters most to you now? Choose three priorities, explore why each matters and describe the behaviour that would make it visible.
Priority one
What matters? Why? How will I act on it?
Priority two
What matters? Why? How will I act on it?
Priority three
What matters? Why? How will I act on it?
“What does each value look like when I act on it?” Choose one small action that would express a priority this week.
